DETROIT -- This was not the run at history that Tigers fans had in mind as they filed into Comerica Park on Sunday afternoon.
While fans packed the right-field seats in hopes of catching -- perhaps literally -- Miguel Cabrera’s 500th career home run, Triston McKenzie stole the show with 7 2/3 perfect innings. Harold Castro broke up the bid, but couldn’t do much about Detroit’s 11-0 loss.
Nine years to the day after Félix Hernández threw MLB’s most recent perfect game, McKenzie seemed headed for the latest, retiring the Tigers’ first 23 batters in order without anything close to a base hit. He struck out the side in order in the third inning, and later fanned the top of the Tigers lineup in order in the seventh -- all on fastballs.
McKenzie’s dominance included Cabrera, whose third bid to join the 500-homer club in front of his home fans went unrewarded. Cabrera struck out swinging at a nasty McKenzie slider to end the first inning, hit a towering popup to short left field in the fourth, then fanned on a 93 mph fastball from McKenzie to end the seventh.
McKenzie continued rolling into the eighth, retiring Jeimer Candelario on a popout behind the plate and Renato Núñez on a comebacker. Up came Castro, who flied out to left field in the second and fifth inning. After working a 2-1 count, Castro chased a high fastball but got enough of it to send a line drive into short right field.
It was a small consolation on a day when Cleveland spoiled Tigers starter Drew Hutchison’s first big league appearance in three years, plating six runs over his 1 2/3 innings. Four of those runs were unearned, thanks to a dropped throw by catcher Grayson Greiner to squander an out at the plate. Five third-inning runs off Ian Krol sent Cleveland cruising to victory.
