WISCONSIN (WAOW) — Every two weeks, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services updates disease activity for the state, as well as for the regions and individual counties.
The latest data is from February 24 through March 9. The state still is considered to have a "high" case burden. At the regional view, six out of the seven regions are still considered high, only the Western region is considered to have "medium" activity.
In North Central Wisconsin, most counties are considered "high." There are a few exceptions: Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Taylor, and Clark county have "medium" activity levels,
This categorization is despite consistently lower reports of new cases. On Wednesday, the state reports 516 new cases and 4,185 new negative cases. It brings the total of confirmed cases to 567,850.
The state also reports 14 deaths, bringing the total of those who have died from the virus to 6,524.
Despite COVID-19 activity level remaining high, hospitals appear to be fairing better. The two categories DHS keeps track of, COVID patients hospitalized and COVID ICU patients, are both considered as "shrinking."
According to that DHS data, 78.4% of all hospital beds are in use and 79.3% of ICU beds are in use (this considers all patients not just COVID-19 patients).
As of Wednesday afternoon, 244 COVID-19 patients were being treated in Wisconsin hospitals, down 11 from the day prior.
Of those, 63 are in the ICU, up two from the day before, according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association.
The decrease in hospitalizations also comes as vaccine distribution continues to ramp up.
As of Tuesday, a total of 1,779,404 vaccines have been administered throughout Wisconsin.
So far, 19.1 percent of Wisconsinites have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, and 10.8 percent of the state has complete the vaccine series.
