LEBANON, Ohio — Lebanon School District is postponing classes until after Labor Day, joining a growing list of school districts in Ohio that are dealing with increasing numbers of coronavirus infections among students and staff.
The school district has 80 students with confirmed cases of COVID-19, with another 10 students home ill and waiting for test results, WLWT Channel 5 reports. More than 900 students are in quarantine because they have had close contact with someone infected, WHIO Channel 7 reports.
“We’re seeing big jumps and spread that’s happening inside our building,” Lebanon Superintendent Isaac Seevers tells WLWT. “We felt like we had to do something to intervene.”
It’s one of several districts in Ohio that have either canceled classes or moved to remote learning because of coronavirus outbreaks.
Sandusky City Schools officials moved middle and high school students to virtual learning through Sept. 3, after four high school faculty members tested positive. Meanwhile, Athens City School District had to cancel classes entirely districtwide through Labor Day after nearly half of its transportation staff was infected or exposed to COVID-19.
Huber Heights Schools has closed Wayne High School for two weeks because so many students either have COVID-19 or are in quarantine, WHIO reports. New Lebanon City Schools has closed an elementary school today and Wednesday because of illnesses, according to WHIO.
Coronavirus cases have been on the increase in Ohio and across the nation. Last week, Ohio reported more than 5,000 new coronavirus infections in a 24-hour period twice within the past seven days, the first time that’s happened in seven months.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. is averaging more than 155,000 new coronavirus cases and 1,200 deaths per day. Several U.S. states have more COVID-19 patients in the hospital now than at any other time during the pandemic.
