A fraternity at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been shut down after an alleged rape, officials said.
The Phi Gamma Delta, or Fiji, fraternity was already on probation for previous violations of university policy before a student reported being raped Monday at the frat house, Chancellor Ronnie Green said Wednesday.
“We are closing the fraternity house and suspending operations for the Fiji chapter while this investigation is ongoing, due to potential violations of that probation,” Green said in a statement. “This is the responsible action to take for everyone involved.”
Green’s announcement came one day after a crowd of students descended on the frat house as reports of the alleged sexual assault spread on social media.
Video obtained by the Lincoln Journal Star shows an incensed crowd chanting “F–k Fiji” while demanding that university officials shutter the fraternity house. Some of the protesters shouted out the accused student’s name or yelled “20 to life or “No means no.”
As of late Wednesday, following a second protest at Fiji, no arrests had been reported, according to the newspaper.
The alleged assault was the 103rd rape or attempted rape reported to university police since 2005. Another rape was reported just eight hours after the alleged attack at Fiji, the Journal Star reported.
University Police Chief Hassan Ramzah said the alleged rape was reported at 3:47 a.m. Tuesday. An ongoing investigation is examining a “variety of different factors based on what was reported,” Ramzah told the Journal Star.
Nearly 200,000 people had signed an online petition seeking to “ban Fiji forever” as of early Thursday.
“They need to be gone permanently, because anything else contributes to the reason why so many women and victims don’t speak up about sexual violence and rape,” one person wrote. “Because nobody will believe them, or listen, or do anything about it. Believe women, and ban FIJI.”
UNL officials suspended the frat in 2017 for three years for “reckless alcohol use, hazing and inappropriate sexually based behavior,” the Journal Star reported Tuesday.
The fraternity said in a statement released during the huge protest that it was cooperating with university police.
“As the investigation continues, we are prepared to take immediate, appropriate action to ensure the safety and security of all who are part of or visit Phi Gamma Delta,” the statement read.
