ORONO — The University of Maine is kicking off its fall semester early by showing appreciation for its new students.
UMaine is hosting a “Celebration of Student Research and Creative Activity” event to help new and returning students prepare for the fall semester.
Provost John Volin said the week-long event will include a TEDx-style lecture from a UMaine faculty member, along with student live performances and undergraduate research elements.
“Research learning experience is what we are starting this week,” said Volin. “These are students who are rising freshmen and rising year sophomores that had the opportunity to come to the campus, learn about the research foundations, and the tools to actually get involved in the research activities. They also developed some sense of belonging and sense of community.”
Volin said UMaine received a generous donation from the Harold Alfond Foundation as of last year.
He said peer mentors help students acclimate to the student life on campus, making sure they have the resources they need to succeed.
“Some of the immediate questions were, ‘I don’t know how to get to the library,'” said peer mentor Hanna Brooks. “They were a little apprehensive the first day. Now what I hear the most is that they are more familiar with the campus, they have a group of friends, someone to eat within the dining hall. That helped some of the nerves going into the first week of school and being back in person.”
The free public event will be held at the Collins Center from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday.
