MILPITAS — Fresenius Medical Care North America has decided to shut one of its Bay Area operations, a decision that will trigger layoffs of nearly 180 workers, according to an official state labor filing.

A unit of Fresenius Medical intends to eliminate 178 jobs in Milpitas, a company filing with the state Employment Development Department shows.

“Spectra Laboratories decided to close its location at Spectra West, 525 Sycamore Drive, Milpitas, and will experience a reduction in its workforce,” Sheryl Morgan, senior director of human resources for Spectra Laboratories, wrote in an official notice to the EDD.

Massachusetts-based Fresenius Medical Care North America anticipated that the job cuts will begin in October.

“The company expects to terminate the employment of all of its employees at this location,” Morgan wrote in the notice.

The first layoffs are slated to occur around Oct. 11 of this year. Further waves of job cuts are scheduled for Jan. 3 and Jan. 31 of 2022, according to the filing.

“The company will endeavor to find alternative positions for potentially affected employees to avoid their separation from employment,” the notice stated.
