Authorities arrested four people while shutting down a huge beach party that grew out of control along the beach front in Long Branch Saturday night, police said Sunday in an update of the incident.
There were no reports of any injuries.
Thousands of people from across the state gathered on the sand in front of Pier Village, enticed by a social media post, Long Branch Police Department said in a Facebook post on Sunday. A social media post on the video sharing platform TikTok advised attendees to bring their own alcohol and marijuana.
Around 5 p.m., “drinking and unruly behavior began” and the crowd was asked to leave, police said. One video on TikTok showed large groups walking in the street and some people riding on top of moving cars.
Long Branch police, dressed in riot gear, dispersed the crowd and arrested for attendees for disorderly persons offenses, police said.
“The City of Long Branch Police Department acted professionally based on their experience and training. I want to thank all of our officers for their professional response in keeping both visitors and citizens of Long Branch safe,” Public Safety Director Domingos A. Saldida said in a statement.
Officers were called to the area after much of the original crowd had already dispersed.
Savannah Storm, who was on the Long Branch boardwalk awaiting a dinner reservation with her boyfriend, told NJ Advance Media that the gathering appeared to be a peaceful dance party.
“There were a lot of people, but it was peaceful and I noticed there were a lot of cops hovering around,” Storm told NJ Advance Media. “A dance party broke out and instantly all of the cops sprang into action to break it up even though there wasn’t any fighting or violence — they were all just dancing.”
