FIRST ALERT: Another warm afternoon with limited rain chances and more activity in The Tropics - WBRC

cicingwos.blogspot.com

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - A moist east/southeasterly wind flow and warm temperatures will help produce a typical summer weather pattern today. The wind flow around a ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic States will continue with the easterly wind flow continuing into tomorrow. With this type of weather pattern will come the best chances for afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms. A ridge of high pressure will continue building allowing for a continued warm flow of air off the Gulf and brining afternoon highs around 90.

By tomorrow night the ridge will finally begin to weaken as an area of low pressure to the northwest begins moving southeast. This will allow for an increase in rain and thunderstorm activity across the area. Meanwhile, an easterly wave will move over the Gulf States but will slowly weaken by mid-week. This wave may provide a focusing area for higher coverage of showers and afternoon thunderstorms than is typical for such a summer weather pattern.

Meanwhile, the low pressure to the northwest will continue inching south pushing a front into the region by Friday. As the front reaches our area there will be more thunderstorms not only during the afternoon but more prevalent through the day and into the overnight hours. By the upcoming weekend there will continue to be numerous to widespread showers and thunderstorms along the front. the timing of the passage of the front is still a bit uncertain but a slow-moving system such as this is capable of producing heavy rain which can lead to localized flooding. In addition, as is typical for these type of weather events there may be a few strong-to-severe thunderstorms but at the moment the likelihood for an organized severe threat does not appear likely.

In The Tropical Atlantic, A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave located over the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands continues to produce disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity.  Some slow development of this system is possible through the middle of next week while it moves a little faster toward the west and then west-northwest at about 20 mph. There is a 30% chance for development with this system over the next five days.

Also, a surface low located a few hundred miles southwest of Bermuda is producing a broad area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.  Surface pressures remain high across the area, and significant development of this system is not anticipated while it moves westward and then west northwestward at about 15 mph over the next few days, reaching the The Southeast Coast late Monday. This system has a 20% chance for development over the next five days.
