Authorities shut down U.S. 36 on ramp at I-25 over abandoned motorcycle with homemade stun gun - Canon City Daily Record

A suspicious-looking homemade stun gun attached to an abandoned motorcycle prompted authorities to briefly shut down the ramp from Interstate 25 to U.S. 36 westbound Sunday.

A concerned passerby alerted Colorado State Patrol that a rider had abandoned a motorcycle on the ramp at about 1:30 p.m., Sgt. Blake White said. When troopers arrived and approached the motorcycle, they saw a “suspicious device or package” attached to it, he said. They backed away, worried about a bomb, and called the Adams County Sheriff’s bomb squad.

There were some “weird wires” coming out of a storage compartment on the motorcycle, said Adams County Sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Sherman. The bomb squad used a water cannon to destroy the device, which they said appeared to be a homemade Taser or stun gun, not a bomb.

“Not explosive at all, no explosive component to it,” Sherman said.

Such devices are not illegal, he said.

“With nobody around to say, ‘Hey I made this,’ the troopers went into action to make sure everyone was safe, and to make sure it wasn’t some kind of explosive device, especially considering where it was parked.”

White said troopers are still investigating why the rider left the motorcycle along the side of the road and it remains to be seen whether the rider will face any charges or citations.

“It’s still under investigation exactly what happened,” he said.
