NEW YORK — Mike Trout took a significant step toward returning to the field on Monday, although he’s still at least three weeks away.
The Angels’ star center fielder, who has been out since he strained his calf on May 17, participated in baseball activity on Monday for the first time since he was injured.
“He had a nice workout at the stadium today,” Manager Joe Maddon said. “He did some nice baseball activity, including swinging the bat a bit. Everything’s moving in the right direction.”
Maddon said that they are targeting a brief rehab assignment for Trout sometime around or possibly right after the All-Star break, which is July 12-15.
The Angels on Monday placed Trout on the 60-day injured list to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Scott Schebler, which means the soonest he could be activated is July 17.
“It keeps progressing in a good way percentage-wise being healed,” Maddon said. “And that’s what I’ve been more focused on than anything. We know that once you really get the go ahead to move forward, he’s still gonna have to get his at-bats. He’s still gonna have to go on a (rehab) assignment a little bit. We have to figure that part of it out. When is that going to happen? I don’t know if the assignments going to occur after the break or not. We’d love that it would occur before that. I doubt it.”
That means Trout is now going to miss at least the eight weeks that was given as the outer end of the six-to-eight weeks the Angels said when the three-time American League MVP was first injured.
“If you think back on how it happened, you would never believe that it’s going to take this long to heal,” Maddon said, “but it’s over the 50 percent range, and it’s doing really well.”
The Angels went into Monday’s game against the Yankees with a 19-18 record since Trout went on the injured list.
OUTFIELD FILL-INS
With Trout and Justin Upton on the injured list, the Angels have been piecing together their outfielder with players like Phil Gosselin and Luis Rengifo, who are normally infielders.
On Monday they recalled Schebler and started him in left field, giving Taylor Ward the night off.“No. 1, he’s a real outfielder,” Maddon said of Schebler. “Get him out there. I wanted to make sure to get Ward a day off, to give (Juan) Lagares a day off. We’ve been playing these guys possibly way too many days in a row. I think sometimes when they do have a downslide, I think it’s just the fact that they’re playing way too often. You need to give them a break.”
Maddon also said that Upton, who is out with a back injury, should be able to play when he’s eligible on Saturday.
