Marcus Stroman could only get through three innings on Sunday, but this time, it wasn’t an injury that ended his day early.
The Mets right hander made his scheduled start despite throwing just one inning before left hip soreness ended his previous outing. But the Phillies pounced on Stroman for four runs over those three innings to pace a 4-2 win over the Mets on Sunday at Citi Field in New York.
On the other side of the ball, it was former Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler who shut down the home team. Wheeler threw seven shutout innings, limiting the Mets to four hits. He struck out eight and walked two on 103 pitches.
The two teams split their four-game series over the weekend.
The Phillies opened the scoring in the second inning with an unearned run against Stroman. Nick Maton walked before Ronald Torreyes singled with one out. Following a sacrifice bunt from Wheeler to move the runners up, but he also reached on an error by second baseman Jeff McNeil to load the bases. Odubel Herrera drove home Maton with a sacrifice fly.
Stroman pitched out of further trouble in the second, but he needed 47 pitches to get through the first two innings. He needed 27 more pitches to get through the third inning after the Phillies tacked on three more runs.
After the Phillies put runners on second and third with one out, Alec Bohm scored Andrew McCutchen with a groundout to shortstop before Maton added a RBI double to make it 3-0. Torreyes then reached on an infield single, and an error by third baseman Luis Guillorme allowed Maton to score.
The Mets finally got on the board once Wheeler exited the game. Francisco Lindor doubled with one out in the eighth inning off reliever Jose Alvarado, and Pete Alonso collected his third hit of the game with a single to centerfield to score Lindor. Back-to-back strikeouts by Michael Conforto and James McCann ended the inning.
Kevin Pillar launched a solo home run to left field with one out in the ninth inning. However, Archie Bradley rebounded to record the save.
