SANTA CRUZ — Santa Cruz County has shown promising signs of lowered transmission in recent weeks, even considering the two-week incubation period after Memorial Day weekend.
While most metrics, such as total known cases of COVID-19, continue to inch upward, one number fluctuates: Active known cases.
Active known cases have dropped overall since June 1, when there were 63 active cases. However, by June 16 the total of active known cases had dropped to 40. After this weekend, that figure is back up to 53 — a number recorded on June 7 as well.
Since the first of the month, only one death has been recorded of a total of 207 — an unvaccinated person, according to local health officials. Approximately 13 new hospitalizations have been reported out of 64 new cases during that time. Approximately 3,500 new COVID-19 tests have come back negative.
In comparison, from May 1 to May 21, two deaths, eight new hospitalizations and 175 new cases were reported. Nearly 4,200 tests came back negative during that time period.
At the time, Santa Cruz County was waiting to move to the yellow tier with more than 284,000 shots administered to residents. As of this weekend, nearly 314,200 doses had been offered and active known cases dropped from 144 to 79.
As California moves “Beyond the Blueprint” and into a less regulated society, the focus has moved from case counts to vaccination rates. It’s estimated by the California Department of Public Health that 57% of the state is fully vaccinated. In Santa Cruz County, 53.5% of the total county population is fully vaccinated. Approximately 62.8% of all people within county limits are partially vaccinated.
Because the majority of individuals here that wanted the vaccine have had the opportunity to do so for an extended period of time, vaccinations have slowed, the county’s recently offered vaccine dashboard shows. On Sunday, the rolling seven-day average was around 550 vaccines. However, vaccine demographics show that interest has not totally waned. The dashboard indicates that 30% of those 12 to 15 years old are vaccinated, a group that just became eligible in mid-May. Around 35% of those 16 to 19, eligible April 15, are vaccinated.
There is work to do in other age groups that became eligible earlier on. Of those eligible in the initial rounds of vaccine distribution, individuals in Santa Cruz aged 30 to 39 are the least vaccinated at 50%. The most vaccinated group in Santa Cruz County is the 50 to 59 demographic at 72%.
General trends
On average, more women have contracted COVID-19 than men in Santa Cruz County. They are also more vaccinated than their counterpart.
Those between the ages of 20 and 29 have suffered the most cases while those 80 to 89 have been most susceptible — resulting in their deaths.
Approximately half the individuals who have died in the county did not live in a congregate facility; 78% of them had at least one significant medical condition that contributed to their deaths.
Though white people in Santa Cruz have died most often, the Latino community has been hit harder as its death rate percentage is larger than the percentage the ethnicity makes up of the county population.
On the vaccination front, due to Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency’s equity efforts, white and Latino individuals have the same vaccination rates at 54% of eligible residents being fully vaccinated.
While the county’s indigenous and Pacific Islander populations are showing encouraging vaccination rates, Black individuals and individuals of multiple ethnicities have fallen behind. Approximately 41% of African Americans in Santa Cruz are fully vaccinated, while just 20% of multiracial people in the area are vaccinated.
