AURORA | For just the second time in the past 12 years, Aurora teams got shut out of the Class 5A Baseball Championship Series after all three city qualifiers got eliminated during regional play Monday.

Since 2009, at least one city squad has earned its way into the double-elimination Championship Series every time except in 2017. That’s all the case this season, as fifth-seeded Regis Jesuit, 16th-seeded Cherokee Trail and 19th-seeded Grandview each came short of making this season’s series, which begins Friday.

The Raiders and Wolves both were in games with berths at stake and came up short against 12th-seeded Legacy and third-seeded Chatfield, respectively.

Regis Jesuit — which won the last 5A state championship in 2019 with last season lost to the coronavirus pandemic — had a seemingly perfect set up to get back to the Championship Series with the home field advantage and the chance to send ace Alec Willis to the mound needing only one win against an opponent that had to play an earlier game in sweltering conditions.

That turned out to be Legacy, which got past Grand Junction in the opening round and then kept the momentum going to deal coach Matt Darr’s Raiders a 7-3 defeat. Regis Jesuit finished the season 12-5.

Grandview, meanwhile, had a long road to go to make the Championship Series and very nearly got there.

Coach Scott Henry’s Wolves rallied to defeat Douglas County 6-5 in the opener — in a game in which the first two hitters from the Huskies homered — and then gave the host Chargers everything they wanted before falling 13-11 to finish the season 11-7.

Cherokee Trail took on 17th-seeded Rock Canyon — coached by Cougars’ former coach Allan Dyer — at All-Star Park in a regional hosted by Heritage. Coach Jon DiGiorgio’s team fell behind by four runs after one inning and couldn’t get all the way back despite a late rally to finish the season 11-6.
