BASEBALL
Three pitchers combined to shut out the Portland Sea Dogs for the first time this season as the Harrisburg Senators won 3-0 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Luis Reyes earned the win for Harrisburg, allowing two hits, while striking out six and walking none in five innings. Andrew Lee pitched three innings, allowing one hits, walking one and striking out four, and Frankie Bartow closed it out with a perfect ninth.
Denyi Reyes took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts.
Aldrem Corredor hit a solo home run in the second inning, and Drew Mendoza and Carlos Tocci each drove in a run in the fourth.
NECBL: David Williams hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Keene SwampBats beat the Sanford Mainers 4-3 in Keene, New Hampshire.
Sanford tied the game in the top of the ninth when Martin Higgins scored on a wild pitch.
OLYMPIC QUALIFYING: Todd Frazier went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBI, and Eric Filia hit a go-ahead two-run homer as the United States earned a berth in the Tokyo Olympics with a 4-2 win over Venezuela in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Red Sox prospects Jarren Duran and Triston Casas each had a hit for the U.S., which went 4-0 in the qualifying tournament.
HOCKEY
Andrew Mangiapane scored two goals to help Canada beat the United States 4-2 on Saturday in the semifinals of hockey’s world championship in Riga, Latvia.
Canada will face Finland in Sunday’s gold-medal match. It’s a rematch of the 2019 final, which Finland won 3-1. The 2020 tournament was canceled because of COVID-19.
Finland beat Germany 2-1 in the other semifinal.
COLLEGES
SOFTBALL: Jocelyn Alo set Oklahoma’s single-season home run record and helped the Sooners beat Georgia 8-0 in six innings in a Women’s College World Series elimination game in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Alo, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, hit her 31st homer in the sixth inning.
Giselle “G” Juarez struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings for the top-seeded Sooners (51-3), who advanced to play No. 2 UCLA in another elimination game Saturday night. UCLA dropped into the elimination bracket late Friday night when Alabama’s Montana Fouts threw a perfect game with 14 strikeouts on her 21st birthday, leading the Crimson Tide to a 6-0 win.
• Florida State rallied to beat Arizona 4-3 in an elimination game.
The Seminoles advanced to play Oklahoma State later Saturday.
With the score tied at three heading into the bottom of the seventh, Florida State’s Kaley Mudge led off with a single. She advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, took third on a throwing error by Arizona second baseman Reyna Carranco and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cassidy Davis.
AUTO RACING
XFINITY: A.J. Allmendinger rallied from a penalty, benefited from a late caution and used a sweeping three-wide pass for the lead to win the Xfinity Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
Saturday’s victory was Allmendinger’s second of the season and came on what Kaulig Racing considers its home track. Team owner Matt Kaulig is from Akron, roughly 90 minutes away, and he jumped off the pit wall to hug Allmendinger after the win.
Kaulig then sought out Justin Haley and kissed him on the cheek in appreciation of the team’s 1-2 finish.
FORMULA ONE: Charles Leclerc won the pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when a crash stopped qualifying for the second round in a row.
Leclerc set a time of 1 minute, 41.218 seconds early in Saturday’s third session. Championship leader Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were just starting their late flying laps when Yuki Tsunoda hit the wall and then Carlos Sainz crashed his Ferrari right behind Tsunoda.
Hamilton will start second and Verstappen third.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: A’ja Wilson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, including four points and two rebounds in the final minute, to help the Las Vegas Aces hold off the Washington Mystics, 96-93.
• Erica Wheeler scored a season-high 22 points while Amanda Zahui B added 13 points and 10 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Chicago Sky, 68-63.
