Bethlehem couldn’t string together enough offense Saturday against Elizabethtown’s Camden Williams, who tossed a 4-0 shutout to knock the Eagles out of the 5th Region tournament quarterfinals.
Williams held Bethlehem (21-15) to just three hits and three walks in the shutout, including striking out the side in the top of the seventh to end the game and put the Panthers (22-14) into Sunday’s semifinals at Bardstown, where they’ll take on Taylor County (30-5), which took down Green County 14-8 in Sunday’s second quarterfinal.
The Eagles’ opportunities were limited all game, but when they did come, the squad couldn’t come up with the big hit to put the pressure on Williams.
Ryder Gregory put Elizabethtown on top in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double off Bethlehem starter Charlie Evans, taking third on a sacrifice and scoring on Williams’ single to center to make it 1-0.
Bethlehem seemed poised to get the run right back, when Ashton Blair led off the top of the second with a double to left, and he took third on a sacrifice grounder, but Williams struck out Cooper Stone looking to end the threat, the first of nine punchouts for the right-hander.
Elizabethtown made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Jacob Moberly hit a hard bouncer to second to start the inning, and the Eagles’ Eli Peake couldn’t handle the tough hop. Jordan Price moved him over with a bloop single to right. Evans retired the next two batters, but walked Gregory to load the bases then plunked Eli Brown to drive in the second run.
Bethlehem all-tournament team member Ethan Winkler doubled to left with one out in the fourth, but Williams was able to retire the next two batters to end the threat. Elizabethtown added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together singles by Brandon Parsons and Gregory, scoring a run on a fielding error and a sacrifice to make it 4-0.
Bethlehem’s best chance to get to Williams came in the top of the sixth. Preson Hall-Pointer singled with one out and took third on a wild pitch and a passed ball, and Teagan Adams walked and took second. Winkler came up next and hit a hard bouncer right back to the mound that Williams was able to stab, freezing the runners and throwing to first for the second out. Blair walked to load the bases, but Williams got out of the jam when Gregory flagged down Cam Porter’s deep drive to center field.
Evans struck out four batters and scattered two walks and seven hits in six innings of work in the loss.
