DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers lengthy skid continued on Sunday and there’s little doubt about where to cast the blame: The offense just isn’t scoring runs.
The Tigers struck out 13 times in a 4-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park
The Tigers (7-15) have lost nine of their last ten games, a span in which they’ve scored just 18 runs.
The Royals (13-7) have won the first three games of this series and will go for the sweep on Monday. The Tigers have struck out 38 times and drawn just four walks against Royals pitching this weekend.
“We’re in the trenches together,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “We’ve all gone through it if you’ve been in this game, and it’s aggravating, it’s maddening, it’s frustrating, everything you can think of. We’re not going to accept it. I mean, it’s not something that the guys are just blowing off and coming back to the ballpark the next day. We’re trying to find solutions.
“Their intent is good. Their give-a-(expletive) is good. They’re up there trying to make an adjustment. Nobody wants to go up there and swing and miss all the time. You see the frustration after a swing and miss. That’s a reflection of the effort they’ve put in and the expectation that they have.”
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer walked two batters in the first, but he escaped the jam and then cruised through quick second and third innings.
It was another abbreviated tandem start with left-hander Tarik Skubal, who took over in the fourth. Skubal gave up a run in the fifth after Michael A. Taylor singled, was sacrificed to second, stole third and then scored on Whit Merrifield’s bloop single. The Royals scored their second run on a solo shot by Hunter Dozier in the sixth.
The Tigers came closest to scoring in the fourth, when they had three of their five hits. But Niko Goodrum was caught stealing and two runners were left on base when Willi Castro struck out to end the inning.
The Royals picked up a couple of unneeded insurance runs in the ninth inning when Carlos Santana hit a two-run single against reliever Buck Farmer.
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, in his first game back after a two-week stint on the injured list, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Up next: The Tigers and Royals wrap up a four-game series on Monday at 1:10 p.m. at Comerica Park. Tigers right-hander Spencer Turnbull (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will face right-hander Brad Keller (1-2, 12.00).
