A’s shut out by Rays, Tyler Glasnow - San Francisco Chronicle

Cole Irvin pitched Wednesday amid some forces out of his control. He held the Rays to two runs over six innings but received no offensive support. Tyler Glasnow handcuffed the A’s lineup for seven frames. A 2-0 loss was their first shutout loss this season.

Irvin’s effort continued his resilient month, yet he is also part of a crowded situation. Weeks ago, the left-hander deemed his spot in the rotation “a temporary thing” with Mike Fiers injured. Fiers has returned; that he did not supplant Irvin right away reflects how Irvin has performed.

Irvin “made his case in spring training and he’s still making his case,” manager Bob Melvin said after Wednesday’s loss. “We could do things a little bit differently going forward, try to get Mike in there at some point to start. But (Irvin) certainly has pitched well enough to stay in the rotation.”

The Astros hit Irvin hard in his first two starts. In his past three, Irvin has allowed three runs in 17 ⅓ innings with two walks and 20 strikeouts. He matched zeroes with Glasnow into the fifth, when two two-out runs sunk him.

“I’m not questioning what my role is. I’m just getting out there trying to get outs,” Irvin said. “Until that conversation needs to be had in the future, I’m going to get out there every fifth day and be ready to compete.”

Wednesday offered a contrast in pitching styles. Glasnow fired fastballs that averaged 97 mph. He struck out 10 as the A’s fanned 13 times in total. Irvin deployed sinkers and four-seamers at 90-91 mph. He struck out eight, a career high.

Irvin allowed hard contact but avoided most damage. He stranded runners after one-out doubles in the first and third innings and had recorded two outs in the fifth before Mike Zunino hammered a 2-2 sinker for a homer. Irvin then walked the No. 9 hitter, Brett Phillips, who scored after Randy Arozarena and Manuel Margot lined singles.

“When you run against guys like Glasnow, you want to be able to put runs on the board but he’s a good pitcher as well, so as the other pitcher, you’ve got to keep it close,” Irvin said. “What really makes me a little frustrated about this outing is that I walked a lefty with two out in Phillips and he ultimately ended up coming around to score. Gave up some loud contact but I’ve always been able to work around it.”

Irvin returned for the sixth and struck out the side, exiting at 98 pitches. His efforts went for naught with the A’s unable to score. Of their seven hits, three were infield singles. In the sixth inning, with two outs, Mitch Moreland doubled and Matt Chapman singled to left field to snap an 0-for-14 skid. Glasnow induced a Seth Brown groundout to end the inning. Matt Olson put two Glasnow pitches into play at 111.5 mph and 110.5 mph off the bat; they led to a double play and a groundout.

Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier ran down a 393-foot drive by Vimael Machin in the seventh. Infield singles by Chapman and Sean Murphy put the potential tying run on base in the ninth but closer Diego Castillo struck out Tony Kemp and retired Machin on a groundout. The A’s are batting .192 with 16 runs scored in six games this road trip but are 3-3.

“From the outside perspective, everybody looks at batting averages or OPS but no one really looks at the hard-hit balls or the good at-bats or the strike threes that people get called on that are balls,” Kemp said. “But one-through-nine, everybody comes off the bench putting together good at-bats. ... We just have to continue to build off the positives that we take each day, the walks we get, the hard-hit line drives that don’t fall. You just have to build off that.

“Those are good swings, and I like where everybody is at right now.”
