What better way to spend the month of May than with your best friend by your side?

Dakin Humane Society’s #ByMySide 31-Day Activity Challenge invites people to join in and pick activities that they enjoy - walking, running, bike riding, playing fetch – ideally with your pet (you’d probably need a dog for that last one). Haven’t got a pet? No worries, you’re welcome to join in the fun. Prefer indoor workouts? Perfectly fine! Want a more relaxing activity? That’s okay…snuggling a cat is considered an activity. The event runs May 1-31.

Registration is $10 and is currently available at http://bit.ly/31-DayChallenge. The Challenge features activity ideas, weekly mini-challenges to win prizes, suggested walk/run routes, and tips to help you reach your fundraising goals for the animals. #ByMySide 31-Day Activity Challenge hopes to raise $20,000 to help keep people and pets together, and a cumulative goal among participants of 100,000 minutes of activity. You can change your activity each week, each day if you like, to keep yourself motivated.

Participants can ask friends and families to support them to help animals in need, and enjoy fun prizes like T-shirts, water bottles, sling bags and jackets, which they’ll win at specific fundraising milestones.

We’re encouraging participants to join Dakin’s official Strava page, a free online platform, to set weekly goals and track your activity. Strava links to social media networks for easy sharing with friends. There are also fundraising tips, including a 31-Day Challenge Virtual Fundraising Toolkit, on www.dakinhumane.org, and an event page on Facebook where you can post photos of yourself in action.

“We planned this new event as a way to celebrate the human-animal bond,” said Kaitlyn Holloway, development and events coordinator at Dakin. “So many of us have found great comfort in the company of our pets during confinement over the past year. Whether it’s the tilt of your dog’s head, the way your guinea pig squeaks at breakfast time, or your cat purring on your lap, our pets have been by our side offering love and companionship. The 31-Day Challenge allows people the chance to get active with their pets and celebrate that friendship.”
