ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees’ bats showed about as much life as the gray, dingy dome capping Tropicana Field.

And starting pitcher Domingo German wasn’t any more inspiring.

The Yankees lost their third straight Saturday, falling to the Rays, 4-0, in their first time being blanked this season. They have lose two of their first three series to start the year after entering as favorites to win the American League East.

Aaron Judge (side soreness) returned to the lineup after taking two games off and went 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts. Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres combined to go hitless in eight at-bats. Jay Bruce’s batting average dropped to .111 with a two-strikeout, 0-for-3 performance.

The Yankees collected just five hits, despite watching starting pitcher Chris Archer (2 1/3 innings, 0 runs) leave early with forearm tightness. A day after missing a game due to COVID-19 vaccine side effects, Gio Urshela didn’t get a hit in three at-bats.

They went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded six runners.

German lasted only four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk. He surrendered two home runs — both solo shots to Austin Meadows (first inning) and Randy Arozarena (third inning). German, who missed all of 2020 suspended following domestic abuse allegations, went only three innings in his first start of the year. The right-hander threw 79 pitches.

German particularly had a rough second inning. He gave up consecutive hits to start the inning before forcing a groundout to first base. Then Francisco Mejia hit one back up the middle. German tried to glove it but the ball deflected toward second base, out of the reach of DJ LeMahieu, who was heavily shifted toward the middle. That allowed Joey Wendle and Willy Adames to score, giving Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead.

The Yankees’ defense once again looked shaky. It committed another two errors. They have seven on the season, tied for the third most in baseball. In the fourth, Gary Sanchez tried throwing Yoshi Tsutsugo out at first base, bounced it well in front of Jay Bruce and the ball went into right field ball. Then Gio Urshela booted an easy grounder in the sixth inning while he was shifted to shortstop.

Left fielder Brett Gardner, however, made a gorgeous, back-handed sliding catch in the fourth inning near the wall for an out.

The Yankees’ bullpen did show up, however. Justin Wilson, in his first appearance of the year, threw a scoreless inning while striking out two. Jonathan Loaisiga threw two scoreless innings, his electric arm wasted as the Yankees played from behind. Luis Cessa threw a scoreless eighth inning.
