Astros shut out by Braves in Game 3 of World Series - Chron

The Braves shut out the Astros and held them to just two hits in a 2-0 Game 3 World Series victory Friday at Truist Park to take a 2-1 series lead.

The Astros didn't get a hit until Aledmys Diaz came through with a pinch-hit single in the eighth. Jose Siri pinch ran for Diaz and stole second and moved to third on an error with two outs. Michael Brantley popped out to end the Astros threat.

Braves starter Ian Anderson had a no-hitter through five innings, but he was pulled instead of having him face the Astros lineup a third time. A.J. Minter, Luke Jackson, Tyler Matzek and Will Smith each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Braves.

"He was effectively wild. I mean, he had a 1-to-1 ratio, balls to strikes, and our guys never could zero in on the strikes," Astros manager Dusty Baker said. "It's no secret they've got a good bullpen. So we didn't center too many balls tonight. We threatened a couple times and didn't get the two-out RBI hits we'd gotten before, and it was kind of an uneventful night for us. But invariably when you shut us down, usually our guys come back the next day and score a bunch. So I hope history repeats itself."

The series resumes with Zack Greinke starting for the Astros in Game 4 at 7:09 p.m. Saturday.

"(Anderson) was commanding his pitches. I mean, give him all the credit. He pitched his tail off tonight, and we didn't really get anything going offensively," said Alex Bregman, who got one of his team's two hits and reached base three times. "But I have a lot of confidence in this team moving forward, and we've just got to string a few more at-bats together."

The Braves broke through against Luis Garcia in the third inning when Eddie Rosario walked and Freddie Freeman singled. Rosario scored on an Austin Riley double down the third-base line. Atlanta added an insurance run in the eighth when Travis d'Arnaud homered to dead center off Kendall Graveman.

Garcia lasted 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and walking out four, but striking out six. The Astros bullpen got a combined effort from Blake Taylor, Yimi Garcia, Brooks Raley and Ryen Stanek to hold the Braves to a 1-0 lead before Graveman gave up the homer in the eighth.

The Astros appeared to have Anderson in trouble in the first inning when Jose Altuve led off the game with a walk. Brantley erased that runner by hitting into a double play, but then Bregman walked, too. Yordan Alvarez flew out to end the first. The Astros put runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth when Alvarez walked and Carlos Correa was hit by a pitch, but Kyle Tucker grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
