FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI -- Two people have been hospitalized in critical condition after gunfire erupted at a Flint Township mall on Saturday, police said.
The Genessee Valley Center was locked down and then closed shortly after 4 p.m. Oct. 16 as police investigated the shooting.
The mall is an active police scene and will be closed the rest of the day, according to the Michigan State Police, who were assisting with the investigation.
Police vehicles were blocking all entrances to the mall and a state police helicopter was flying above Saturday evening.
Speaking to WSMH at the scene after the shooting, Flint Township Police Lt. James Baldwin said two people were struck by gunfire Saturday afternoon, and were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The shooting occurred after a “physical altercation” involving multiple people turned violent, Baldwin said, leading to guns being drawn and fired.
“Those two people that were struck were part of that original altercation,” Baldwin said. “No bystanders were involved.”
Officers have secured the area where the shooting took place, Baldwin said. No arrests had yet been made.
