BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State women's soccer won in shutout fashion, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon against Indiana, picking up their first conference-opening win since 2015. The Spartans scored early and kept up a strong defense in the second half to hold Indiana to just five shots on goal and no goals scored. With the win, goalkeeper Lauren Kozal picked up her fifth shutout of the season.
The Green & White stay undefeated with a 6-0-2 mark, wrapping up the nonconference portion of the season with four shutout victories and kicking off Big Ten play with a blanking of the Hoosiers. Over eight games the Spartans have allowed just three goals to score from opponents, dominating with 16 goals of their own scored.
The sole goal of the game and the game-winner was scored by Camryn Evans, her second goal of the season coming off the heels of her goal at Dayton last week. In the 15th minute, a goalie kick by Indiana was captured by Evans, who sent a strike into the top right corner of the net for the score. The Spartans and the Hoosiers were evenly matched at five shot attempts each in the first half, while MSU had three shots on goal to Indiana's two. Both goalkeepers had two saves each.

Spartan defense was strong throughout the match, with the backfield closely guarded by Samantha White, Zivana Labovic and Raegan Cox for nearly the full 90 minutes. Kozal as the anchor ended the match with five saves. Indiana put up a fight in the second frame, taking 14 shots to Michigan State's three attempts, but were unable to capitalize.
The women's soccer team is back at DeMartin Stadium this Thursday, September 23 for a game under the lights against Wisconsin. The Badgers are also 1-0 in conference play having defeated Minnesota 2-1 on Saturday.
