Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Latest Stunt: Trying In Vain To ‘Shut Congress Down’ - Forbes

Topline

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Monday repeatedly attempted to “shut Congress down” in a long-shot effort to block several spending bills, the latest example of the House freshman turning to publicity stunts to grab headlines in lieu of committee assignments.

Key Facts

Greene complained in a floor speech Monday afternoon that she was told she couldn’t file a motion to adjourn the House for the day before the official legislative day began, declaring, “We should make a motion to adjourn because Congress should stop.”

Greene tweeted later that she tried again to file her motion but that the House went into recess immediately – though House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer appeared to schedule a vote on it later in the evening.

Greene said in tweets and her speech that the ostensible goal of her motion is to “shut Congress down” because it is “dysfunctional” and “ruining the lives of the American people,” citing a bill Democrats passed on Friday to expand abortion access.

That bill has provided Greene with ample opportunities to garner attention: on Friday she went viral for heckling Democrats on the Capitol steps as they held a press conference to celebrate the bill, with Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) shouting back.

Key Background

Greene has been a controversy magnet since she entered Congress in January. She has elicited criticism even from members of her own party for comparing pandemic measures to the Holocaust and for various efforts to slow down House proceedings. She has also fiercely opposed the bipartisan infrastructure bill and Democrats’ separate spending bill, threatening to primary GOP colleagues who vote for either one.

Big Number

12. That’s the share of House Republicans who voted against Greene’s motion, which failed 193-228 when it came up for a vote Monday night. The list includes moderate and anti-Trump Republicans including Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), as well as some staunch conservatives like Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.).

What To Watch For

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said the House is set to vote on the infrastructure bill Thursday, with the hope that the spending bill will also pass by the end of the week. However, progressive Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) told Forbes, “I don’t believe it will come for a vote unless we have reconciliation done, and I think that will be hard.”
