Midway through a performance by OC rock band Greer, a sudden downpour shut down the Ohana Festival at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point just hours into the event.

As thunder rumbled and lightning streaked across the sky, the venue was evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

However, thousands of fans were left scrambling — many having parked at a secondary location and taken the shuttle into the event.

Promoters let fans know they’d receive updates about being let back into the venue via social media channels.

On the event’s Twitter, a message read: “Due to lightening in the area, we are evacuating the venue and pausing the show. We expect to open up fully, shortly as the storm is passing quickly. Please continue to follow social media and we will let you know when it’s safe to re-enter.”

Finally, after waiting a little less than an hour, the crowd was allowed back into the venue.

The festival’s Twitter announced the reopening a little before 5 p.m., saying: “We are pleased to announce that it is safe to re-enter the festival grounds. In the spirit of Ohana, please remember to be safe and respectful to your fellow festival goers. Welcome back!”

Durand Jones & The Indications welcomed back the crowd with some soulful tunes and a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” during which the crowd sang the “thunder only happens when it’s raining” line.

Midway through the song, the sun peeked back out through the clouds as people danced and sang along. The Ohana Fest seems like it’s back on track as patrons, once clad in summer clothing, now sport festival hoodies and line up for drinks to make up for the lost hour.
