PITTSBURGH — The Cubs are expected to put infielder Nico Hoerner on the injured list Wednesday for the fourth time this season, ending the former first-round pick's season with just 44 games played.
Infielder Trent Giambrone is in Pittsburgh and expected to join the roster Wednesday for his big-league debut.
Hoerner hasn't played since starting both games of Friday's doubleheader because of "general soreness" related to lingering issues with the hamstring and oblique that previously forced him to the IL.

Only five games are left in the season, and manager David Ross questioned the wisdom of pushing it Tuesday, even before the decision was made.
“Look, with the season he’s gone through, it’s just the radar is high,” Ross said Tuesday.
Last year's Gold Glove finalist at second base finishes this season with a .302 batting average and .382 on-base percentage — and four fewer games than he played during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Giambrone's debut will make him the 65th player used by the Cubs this season, nine more than the club's previous record (in 2013).
He will be the 39th to make his Cubs debut this season, five more than the previous franchise record (also 2013).
Giambrone, who has played mostly second base in 72 games for Iowa this season, hit .174 with a .274 on-base percentage for the I-Cubs.
