Starting pitcher Casey Mize allowed three home runs in an eight-batter span and the Detroit Tigers were shut out for the second consecutive game in a 7-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics Saturday afternoon at RingCentral Coliseum.

Mize, who was coming off the best start of his career five days ago in Houston, allowed three home runs and a triple that was very nearly a home run in the first and second innings. All the hits and scoring came with two outs.

He settled in to pitch five innings, striking out four without a walk, but the lead was already insurmountable for the Tigers’ struggling offense.

A’s starter Cole Irvin pitched six shutout innings. For the second day in a row, the Tigers not only didn’t score, they almost never threatened to score.

“Two days in a row, we haven’t scored a run. That’s not going to lead you to many wins,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “You do have to tip your cap and pay your respect to the guy on the other side, but also satay in the fight and do what you can to make it more difficult on them. They’ve really won the batter-pitcher competition on both sides, and that’s why we’ve ended up on the short end.”

The Tigers’ bullpen, which entered the game with a 7.24 ERA in 51 innings of work, had more problems after Mize left the game.

Reliever Joe Jimenez walked four batters in 2/3 of an inning of work. He walked three batters on Thursday and retired just one batter.

The last time Oakland shut out the Tigers on back-to-back days was June 9-10, 1973, in what was then known as Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

The Tigers were last shut out on consecutive days by the Toronto Blue Jays on March 29 and 30, 2019, the second and third games of the season.

Up next: The Tigers (6-9) began this road trip with three losses in Cleveland. They then swept the Astros in Houston. They’ll try to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Athletics (8-7) on Sunday at 4:07 p.m.

Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd (2-1, 1.86 ERA) will face A’s right-hander Chris Bassitt (1-2, 4.96).
