Asdrúbal Cabrera bunted against the shift from the left side to lead off the fourth with the first, and only, hit Atlanta Braves’ righty Ian Anderson gave up in his seven innings of work on the mound tonight in the nation’s capital, in what ended up a 2-1 win over Washington.
Corbin vs ATL: Patrick Corbin gave up nine hits, four walks, and five earned runs in 5 1⁄3 IP last weekend in Atlanta, and tonight, the left-hander was facing the Nats’ NL East rivals in the nation’s capital, where he had a 3.33 ERA and .263/.300/.432 line against in four starts and 24 1⁄3 IP this season (vs a 5.48 ERA and .303/.370/.506 line against in four starts and 21 1⁄3 IP on the road).
Corbin said that day that facing the Braves again in consecutive outings wasn’t too much of a concern.
“They’re a great team. This year, last year, their lineup is strong from top to bottom, so you have to be on your game,” he said.
“We’ll just try to take some of the good things today, try to get better going into my next one. That’s all you can do, you just try to execute pitches and try to get better.”
Ronald Acuña, Jr. singled to left to start tonight’s game, stole second, and scored on an RBI single to center by Marcell Ozuna to make it 1-0 early.
Corbin held the Braves off the board in the second and third innings, but Adam Duvall hit a double to right with one down in the fourth, then scored on a two-out Ozzie Albies’ hit, 2-0.
After stranding a leadoff single in a seven-pitch fifth, and stranding one- and two-out hits in the top of the sixth, Corbin was up to 96 pitches overall on the night, and he came back out with a scoreless, 12-pitch seventh which ended his outing...

Anderson vs D.C.: Ian Anderson, 22, was the Braves’ 2016 1st Round pick (3rd overall), and the righty made his MLB debut late last month, tossing six strong innings in which he gave up just a run on six hits in a 5-1 win over the New York Yankees. He went six innings against the Boston Red Sox in start No. 2 as well (6 H, 2 ER), but was out after three last time out on the mound before tonight, giving up just two hits and two runs (one earned), but walking a total of four batters in an 83-pitch appearance.
“I’d rather go out there and go five or six [innings] and give up three or four [runs] rather than just going three,” Anderson said, as quoted by MLB.com’s Mark Bowman after what ended up a 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins in that outing.
“For me, as a starter, that’s always tough to swallow.”
Start No. 4 of his MLB career began with a scoreless first in which he worked around a two-out walk to Juan Soto, and he stranded back-to-back walks which led off the second.
Asdrúbal Cabrera bunted against the shift for the Nationals’ first hit of the game in the first at bat of the fourth, but he was stranded as well, and a 12-pitch, 1-2-3 fifth left the righty at 77 pitches total after five scoreless, with a 2-0 lead.
A 14-pitch, 1-2-3 sixth left the rookie righty at 91 pitches overall, and he came back out for the seventh and struck out two in an eight-pitch, 1-2-3 frame, for 99 pitches total in what was a dominant outing.
Ian Anderson’s Line: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 9 Ks, 99 P, 58 S, 6/3 GO/FO.
Turn-On: With a double in his second trip to the plate last night, Trea Turner (who ended the night 2 for 5 with a walk) extended a hit streak to nine straight games, over which he was 14 for 38 (.368 AVG) with two doubles, two triples, two homers, eight RBIs, five walks, six stolen bases, and 10 runs scored.
Turner went 0 for 3 the first three times up against Braves’ starter Ian Anderson, but he hit an RBI double to right-center off Shane Greene in the eighth to extend his streak and get a run on the board for the home team after 7 2⁄3 scoreless by Atlanta’s pitchers.
BULLPEN ACTION: Kyle McGowin took over for the Nationals in the eighth, and retired the Braves in order in a 13-pitch frame.
Shane Greene came on for the Braves in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a leadoff hit to right by Adam Eaton, who stole second in the next at bat, and scored two outs later on a Trea Turner double to right-center, 2-1.
Will Smith took over for Greene with Juan Soto up and Turner on second, and got a ground ball to the right side for the final out of the frame.
McGowin struck out the side in a 17-pitch ninth to keep it close.
Mark Melancon got the ninth for the Braves, and gave up a leadoff hit by Asdrúbal Cabrera, who was replaced at first by pinch runner Josh Harrison.
Eric Thames stepped in next, and sent a swinging bunt towards third for an infield single. Two on, no out. Carter Kieboom came on to run for Thames. Yan Gomes started up 2-0, then K’d swinging at a 2-2 curve for out No. 1. Luis García stepped in next and hit a high chopper back to the mound for out No. 2, advancing both runners. Adam Eaton? Started 2-0 so they walked him intentionally to get to Victor Robles, who came up with the bases full of Nationals and sent a fly to right to end it.
Final Score: 2-1 Braves
Nationals now 17-27
