Interstate 65 in Birmingham is shut down after an 18-wheeler hydroplaned and ruptured two large gas tanks.
No one was injured in the crash, but Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo said the impact led to the spill of roughly 250 gallons of fuel.
The crash happened in the northbound lanes near the Green Springs Avenue exit. Carrillo said the truck hydroplaned and struck a guard rail. At the point of impact, the cab of the truck separated from the cargo frame and they ended up about 35 feet apart.
No other cars were involved in the accident.
Authorities have shut down all northbound lanes and two of the southbound lanes while they try to contain the spill and keep the fuel from entering the storm sewage system.
Carrillo said there is no estimated time yet for the roadway to reopen. Birmingham police are working with traffic control.
