With safety concerns caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Old Town Temecula Community Theater and cabaret club venue The Merc has extended its cancellation of performances through January 2021.

“This decision follows guidance from our City Manager, the Riverside County Public Health Officer, and State Governor. Our top priority is always to keep our patrons, volunteers, and staff safe as the pandemic continues,” a theater newsletter stated.  “We hope to once again bring cultural enrichment to our community soon.”

The theater, which closed in March, had originally postponed reopening until fall. However, COVID-19 safety concerns further delayed those plans.

“We had been notifying people three months at a time, but finally figured we wouldn’t be opening this year,” said Beatriz Barnett, the Temecula community services superintendent who oversees the city’s cultural events. “We are using this different time of COVID closures and social distancing to make sure the theater is in tip-top condition when we do return.”

Pandemic closures won’t stop community theater, open since 2005 in the heart of Old Town, from promoting the arts.

Jazz at the Merc continues to host virtual jazz concerts on Thursdays until the end of September.

The theater also moved its 15th-year anniversary celebration online, with a free live-streamed concert starring Hawaiian vocalist Amy Hānaiali’i on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Registration has also started for middle and high school students interested in arts education. Students can audition for an upcoming production of Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach,” scheduled for February 2012, as part of the city’s internship program for those interested in acting, backstage and professional mentorship.

“We want to keep putting entertainment out there. It’s hard, as a patron of the arts,” Barnett said. “But we’re still managing to do things online and give our patrons free experiences and shows, (which are) normally ticketed events. We’re giving a present to our community by being present for them.”

Patrons can continue checking Temecula’s website, social media and the Temecula Theater Foundation website for updates on activities and the reopening.
