After 40 years, I’ve been shut out of Alaska by the coronavirus — and by the people who refuse to protect themselves and others from it.
I’m immunocompromised by a condition I have, and immunosuppressed from the treatment — ‘ultravulnerable’. I had gone to Seattle for treatment, because there isn’t a specialist in Alaska, and just as things were doing better, the pandemic and quarantine came.
Flying is out of the question, and driving under the Alaska exception is too risky. Then there’s being there, with the current, ongoing high rates of new infection and the maskless dancers and others.
It looks like my week in Anchorage last November will be the last one for years to come. Some freedom.
