Cameron Peak Fire sees activity, evacuations on Saturday - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Fire managers reported Saturday morning that the Cameron Peak Fire grew to 24,406 acres on Friday, an increase of 503 acres. Though they had not issued an update on size by press time Saturday night, they reported an increase in fire activity on the Facebook page that provides fire updates at around 5 p.m.

The post said, which came after a cloud of smoke drifted south over Loveland and obscured the sun, said: “As you can undoubtedly see, there is significantly increased fire activity on the Cameron Peak Fire this afternoon. There have been no winds driving the fire as yet, movement is primarily due to available fuels. Most activity is to the East toward Brown’s Lake Trailhead with additional movement north/northeast along Green Ridge and to the south.”

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, fire officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for people in the area along Colo. 14 from Fish Hatchery east to Kelly Flats, and for the Pingree Park Road from Colo. 14 south to the housing district east of the CSU Mountain Campus  “due to immediate and imminent danger.” Voluntary evacuations were recommended for those in the area of County Road 44H from Pennock Pass east to County Road 27 as well as residences to the south using County Road 44H as access.

After 7 p.m. voluntary evacuations also were recommended for Crystal Lakes, Red Feather Lakes and the west side of Manhattan Road from County Road 74E down to Colo. 14.

The last report on containment set it at 6% on the forest fire that has been burning since Aug. 13, about 15 miles southwest of Red Feather Lakes.

A cold front is expected to move in from the north Monday night into Tuesday, and to bring precipitation that could help in the effort.

The report from the incident management teams said a red flag warning is in effect for Sunday and Monday.

A smoke report said stronger west-northwest winds Saturday into Sunday would focus smoke primarily within the Poudre Valley and North Fork of the Big Thompson, as well as the Front Range into the plains from Fort Collins to Longmont and toward Greeley.

Widespread smoke also is expected to move into the region from other western wildfires on Sunday.

Fire managers said Saturday morning the fire was expected to continue burning along Green Ridge, progressing north off Sleeping Elephant Mountain, and south along the Big South Trail/main stem of the Cache La Poudre River.

Crews will maintain a 24-hour presence along Colo. 14 to monitor those areas and conduct burn out operations as needed, they said.
