When it became evident that shelter-at-home orders would remain in place for the foreseeable future, the team at Sun City Palm Desert wanted to come up with a way to help keep residents occupied with fun and interesting things to do. The result was the Sun City Palm Desert Activity Portal on the organization's website. The portal provides residents with links to eBooks they can download for free, travel videos they can watch, brain teasers, puzzles and literally thousands of things they can do with their computers, tablets and smartphones while staying safely in place.

"We set up the Activity Portal not just to entertain our residents while they were staying home, but also to give them new experiences and the ability to learn new things," Joel Effron, Sun City Palm Desert's marketing committee chair, told The Desert Sun. "Keeping our minds active and fit is as important as keeping our bodies active and fit."

Residents can also access fitness videos to help them stay in shape, explore museums and national parks and learn and practice Spanish. There are also live cam feeds from around the world at aquariums, zoos and natural habitats where residents can observe real animals in real time.

Other activities include listening to lectures or attending college-level courses, watching plays, listening to a variety of musical genres and playing trivia.

"We work hard to find activities and amenities that will enrich the lives of our residents, and one of the goals of this project was to provide not just entertainment but exercise for both the body and the brain," Effron said, adding that brain games is currently the portal's most popular subject.

As people around the country battle boredom and inactivity due to COVID-19 restrictions, the people at Sun City Palm Desert have found a safe and fun way to give back to the members of their own community. "Our residents, both through our many clubs and groups, and individually, are a very generous, giving and caring community, and we try hard to support that spirit," Effron said. He hopes that by sharing this, it "might inspire some other communities to develop similar activities for their residents."
