About 100 dogs and cats were removed Friday from a property in Danville, six of which had to be euthanized because of their medical condition, Contra Costa County animal control officials said.

The county’s animal services agency reported on Facebook that officers responding to reported “hoarding activity” found about 70-75 dogs and 25 cats at the property.

Most of the animals were safely removed, but “sadly, six of the dogs that were brought to CCAS had to be euthanized due to their medical condition,” the agency said.

It was unclear who might have been hoarding the animals or the type of property where they were found. Contra Costa Animal Services did not immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday.

A team of representatives from Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, the East Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Berkeley Humane helped remove the animals to be medically evaluated, the agency said in its Facebook post. They were in stable condition.

Contra Costa Animal Services brought 32 dogs and five cats into their shelters, and 42 animals were sheltered among the other three groups, the agency said.

The agency on Saturday said some animals remained on the property, and its team continued to assess them. No further details were immediately available.
