SAN JOSE — One person was arrested, and more than 200 citations were issued after police quickly shut down an illegal sideshow taking place in downtown early Saturday.

San Jose police responded to a report that more than 100 vehicles had gathered in the area of Park Avenue and Woz Way, near John P. McEnery Park, at around 12:30 a.m., a social media post by the department said. A coordinated response by officers ended the sideshow, which police said is a “dangerous” event that “is not welcome in San Jose.”

Police issued 205 citations to both drivers and spectators for various violations, towed away several cars and made one arrest for an outstanding warrant.

San Jose, like many other Bay Area cities, continues to be plagued by sideshows that can involve hundreds of participants and spectators and close down streets. Speeding, doing doughnuts and other dangerous types of driving are the norm at the events.

There have been fatalities at some sideshows in different cities as well as violent crimes, including homicides, non-fatal shootings and sexual assaults. In San Jose, a spectator was seriously injured on July 31, after being struck by a vehicle at one of four sideshows that took place in the city that night.

In late June, San Jose made it a crime to promote or encourage sideshows through social media, reportedly becoming one of the first cities in the nation to do so. Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and face fines of up to $1,000, six months in jail or some combination of both if they promote, instigate or encourage any such events online following an ordinance passed by the San Jose City Council.

On Friday, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and police Chief LeRonne Armstrong announced that California Highway Patrol would help patrol Oakland’s streets, starting this weekend, in a collaborative effort with police to crack down on sideshows and other dangerous driving antics.
