'Decrease in wildfire activity' expected throughout September - KamloopsBCNow

Much like July, the front half of August saw intense heat stirring up many wildfires across BC.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, 289 more fires started last month, burning over 300,000 hectares in the process. Though it began to cool in the second half of the month, lightning and strong winds created issues for firefighters.

Thankfully, significant rainfall in Southern BC has helped slow recent fire conditions. Areas such as the South Okanagan, Cariboo and Southern Vancouver Island still have potential for more growth as well as new fires.

"There was sufficient precipitation to increase fuel moisture content and decrease fire activity enough for crews to make good progress," wrote the service. "As a result, the majority of the fires previously considered Out of Control were reclassified to Being Held or Under Control in early September."

September's fire outlook is beginning to seem more "seasonal." Conditions have settled into a pattern with cooler temperatures and increased precipitation.

"The long-term forecast suggests this will continue throughout most of the province with the exception of the Coast, particularly Vancouver Island."

"Based on the models, we are also predicting a moderate amount of precipitation throughout the month of September. The anticipated rain and cooler temperatures will result in the ongoing decrease in wildfire activity and wildfire risk. The risk of further growth will continue to be low."

As the nights begin to get longer, fuel will take more time to dry. This, and increased humidity from rainfall, should lead to less danger.
