Lenape coach Joe Wojceichowski said Monday his football program, ranked No. 3 in the state, would be shut down for 14 days, with its opener against Cherokee postponed after a pair of positive COVID-19 tests in the program.

Barring a setback, the Indians will resume practice on Oct. 2 – the day they were scheduled to play Cherokee – and hope to play the following week against Eastern on Oct. 9

Lenape began official practices on Thursday, but Wojceichowski said positive tests on Thursday and Friday led to decision, based on recommendations from the Burlington County Board of Health.

Lenape High School paused in-person learning on Friday, then resumed on Monday.

The Lenape football program held summer workouts beginning July 20 and running four days a week through Aug. 27 before returning for practices last Thursday.

“We would be in big trouble without the summer workouts,” Wojceichowski said. “It wasn’t what the summer would normally look like, but it’s absolutely crucial we were out there. We were able to install the offense and defense, and it will make everything easier and smoother.”

He added he was confident the team, after returning to practice on Oct. 2, would play Eastern on Oct. 9.

There are no openings in the Lenape schedule since it moved its traditional Thanksgiving Day game against Shawnee to Oct. 31. Wojceichowski said he thought Lenape might play Cherokee as part of the postseason set-up.

Wojceichowski said his players were frustrated but eager to get the season under way.

“They’re pretty motivated to play, they want to be back,” Wojceichowski said. “We just have to keep them engaged virtually, review the install and film and just make sure they get outside on their own and not sit around being stagnant.”
