Chemical activity up in August - Modern Bulk Transporter

The Chemical Activity Barometer (CAB), a leading economic indicator created by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), rose by 2.5% in August on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis following a 3.0% gain in July.

On a year-over-year basis, the barometer was down 6.1% in August.

The unadjusted data show a 1.8% gain in August following a 1.5% gain in July and a 4.1% gain in June. The diffusion index rose from 41% to 59% this month—the first time since January that it has been above 50%. The diffusion index marks the number of positive contributors relative to the total number of indicators monitored. The CAB reading for July was revised upward by 1.08 points and that for June was revised upward by 0.77 points.

“With four consecutive months of gains, the latest CAB reading is consistent with recovery in the U.S. economy, which is likely to be slow,” said Kevin Swift, chief economist at ACC. “The August reading is only 5.8% below its pre-coronavirus level, and the indicator appears to be improving at a fairly good pace.”

The CAB has four main components, each consisting of a variety of indicators: Production, equity prices, product prices, and inventories and other indicators.

In August, production-related indicators were mixed. Trends in construction-related resins, pigments and related performance chemistry were mostly positive, and this sector has been strong. Resins and chemistry used in other durable goods were positive. Plastic resins used in packaging and for consumer and institutional applications showed strong gains. Performance chemistry improved, while U.S. exports were mixed. Equity prices gained and product and input prices strengthened. Inventory and other supply chain indicators were positive.

The CAB is a leading economic indicator derived from a composite index of chemical industry activity. Due to its early position in the supply chain, chemical industry activity has been found to consistently lead the U.S. economy’s business cycle, and the barometer can be used to determine turning points and likely trends in the broader economy. Month-to-month movements can be volatile, so a three-month moving average of the CAB reading is provided. This provides a more consistent and illustrative picture of national economic trends.

Applying the CAB back to 1912, it has been shown to provide a lead of two to 14 months, with an average lead of eight months at cycle peaks as determined by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The median lead was also eight months. At business cycle troughs, the CAB leads by one to seven months, with an average lead of four months. The median lead was three months. The CAB is rebased to the average lead (in months) of an average 100 in the base year (the year 2012 was used) of a reference time series. The latter is the Federal Reserve’s Industrial Production Index.

The CAB comprises indicators relating to the production of chlorine and other alkalies, pigments, plastic resins and other selected basic industrial chemicals; chemical company stock data; hours worked in chemicals; publicly sourced, chemical price information; end-use (or customer) industry sales-to-inventories; and several broader leading economic measures (building permits and new orders). Each month, ACC provides a barometer number reflecting activity data for the current month, as well as a three-month moving average. The CAB was developed by the Economics Department at ACC.

Kenworth recently introduced new options for its T270 and T370 medium-duty conventional trucks.

The roll-back flatbed application is now an approved body type for use with the proven Kenworth AG210L single-axle rear suspension on the T270 and T370. The Kenworth AG210L is a 21,000-pound rated highway, two-bag, rear air suspension that features a proven trailing arm design and provides a smooth ride.

The T270 and T370 also add CX chrome round convex mirrors as an option. The driver and passenger side hood-mounted convex mirrors provide an enhanced side view and help to eliminate blind corners.

The Kenworth T270 and T370 also offer an updated version of the optional Bendix side object detection system. Changes include increased field of view and enhanced detection. The detection range is now up to 20 feet forward and 20 feet backward from the sensor’s location. The system also adds stationary object filtering when at speeds above 20 mph.

According to Bendix, its driver assistance technologies are designed to complement safe drivers, safe driving practices, and proactive driver training programs, not replace them. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at all times.

The T270, a true Class 6 vehicle rated at 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW), is available as a straight truck and is configured for non-CDL operation. The Class 7 T370 offers a GVW range from 26,001 to 66,000 pounds as a straight truck or tractor, and is a multi-dimensional performer to suit almost any vocation.
