HOUSTON -- Aledmys Diaz hit a grand slam in the fourth inning as the Houston Astros cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Minute Maid Park to complete a four-game sweep.
The Tigers (8-19) have lost 12 of their last 14 games. The Astros (18-11) have won seven in a row and 11 of their last 13.
“This was a terrible series,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “We need to play better. We’re going to go home and we’ve got to try to fix this over the long haul. It’ll start with one game. We haven’t played a really good, clean game where we came out on top in a while.”
The first three games of the series were decided by just one run and were at least somewhat suspenseful. The finale offered none of that.
The Tigers’ offensive woes show no signs of abating. Jonathan Schoop’s double in the second inning was their only hit of the game. Rookie Spencer Torkelson and veteran Miguel Cabrera each had three strikeouts.
The Tigers, low on starters due to injuries and a brutal upcoming schedule, used a “bullpen day” on Sunday. Wily Peralta started, walked three of the first four batters he faced, but survived to pitch two scoreless innings.
Reliever Drew Hutchison struggled with control as much as Peralta, loading the bases on a single and two walks. Unlike Peralta, he didn’t escape unscathed. With two outs, Diaz hit a high fly ball to left-center, where the Crawford boxes seating area just outs into the field. Akil Baddoo positioned himself at the wedge of the fence, ready to make a catch, but it landed in the front row of the seats.
It would have been a flyout in 28 of 30 Major League parks. On Sunday, it was a grand slam.
As the Tigers have scored more than four runs only once in the last 14 games, that was really all the Astros needed. They tacked on an additional run when Alex Bregman hit a solo shot against reliever Joe Jimenez in the fifth.
The Tigers’ best chance to score may have come in the ninth, when Javier Baez hit a long drive to right. Kyle Tucker leaped well above the wall to grab the ball and steal a home run.
“No one likes losing,” said Tigers catcher Eric Haase. “It’s a long season, but that doesn’t make it any easier day to day.”
Up next
The Tigers open a five-game, four-day series with the Oakland Athletics on Monday at 7:10 p.m. at Comerica Park. Tigers right-hander Michael Pineda (1-1, 3.77 ERA) will face A’s right-hander Paul Blackburn (3-0, 2.22).
