Two people were killed early Tuesday in separate crashes on Interstate 20 in St. Clair County that shut down the interstate.
Just after 3 a.m., Alabama State Troopers were notified of multiple crashes on I-20 between mile markers 155 and 158 near Pell City, according to Senior Trooper Justin O’Neal. All westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes had to be closed.
As of 6:30 a.m., said Trooper Cpl. Reginal King, all westbound lanes near the 155 mile marker remained block and would be closed for an undetermined amount of time. Westbound traffic, he said, was being diverted at Exit 158.
By 8:30 a.m., all eastbound lanes were opening, and one westbound lane was open.
St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell confirmed that both victims were killed in wrecks in the westbound lanes.
At least one of the vehicles involved – a tractor-trailer – caught fire.
The number of additional injuries has not yet been released.
