The Bruins had a good end to a bad week.
Behind 30 saves from Jeremy Swayman and a strong effort by the fourth line, Boston got ahead early and held off the Ottawa Senators late en route to a 2-0 win in the Canadian capital.
The Bruins were without Patrice Bergeron, Matt Grzelcyk and Urho Vaakanainen due to injures and Brad Marchand on the second game of his six-game suspension. But after a dud in Thursday’s loss to Carolina, Boston was much better Saturday.
Trent Frederic scored on the first shift of the game as the Bruins’ newly-constituted second line of him, Coyle and Craig Smith, came out fast and aggressive. Frederic knocked home the rebound of Coyle’s shot to make it 1-0, 45 seconds line.
Former Senator Curtis Lazar made it 2-0 later in the period, converting Anton Blidh’s rebound.\ with 7:34 left in the first.
That combination nearly converted again in the third, but Lazar was called for goalie interference on Blidh’s would-be goal.
It didn’t matter. Swayman, who was making his second start since Tuukka Rask retired, made 30 and continued to stand out on the road for the Bruins.
The Bruins play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Thursday.
