ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up its first win of the dual-match season by shutting out Western Michigan 7-0 on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Michigan grabbed the early lead after dominating on the doubles court, dropping just two total games across all three matches.

U-M's top pair of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller breezed to a 6-0 win as the first match off court. The pair fought off a pair of break points in the early going on Miller's serve, using an ace to send it to the deuce point before prevailing to back up the early break at 2-0. It was all Michigan from there to get the first win.

Michigan's No. 3 duo of Anca Craciun and Nicole Hammond prevailed moments later to give Michigan a 1-0 lead, getting a 6-1 win. Craciun and Hammond raced out to a 4-0 lead en route to the victory.

Craciun accounted for Michigan's second point of the afternoon, not dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.

Gala Mesochoritou picked up her first win of the season in a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 for U-M's third point of the day. In the first set, she got the break she needed in the third game for a 2-1 lead. That was all the space she needed to grab the 6-2 win. In the second set, Mesochoritou converted on a deuce point to get the break at 3-2. She won the remaining three games to put the third point on the scoreboard for the Maize and Blue.

Moments later and right next to Mesochoritou, Brown clinched the match for Michigan behind a 6-3, 6-0 win. Brown took advantage of a late break in the first set, going up 5-3 and then serving out the set in the ensuing game. It was all Brown in the second as she converted on her second match point when her opponent netted her service return.

Julia Fliegner recorded her first dual-match win in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 4. The first set stayed on serve until she got a break in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead. The Wolverine freshman won the next two game for the 6-2 win. It did not take long for Fliegner to take control in the second set as she got the early break at 3-1 and never looked back.

Hammond was the next off court, getting a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3. After falling behind a break in the first set, she battled to get back on serve at 4-4. Hammond held in her ensuing service game for a 5-4 lead. She converted on the deuce point in the next game, breaking Karin Hamilton for the 6-4 first-set win. It was all Hammond in the second as she raced out to an insurmountable 3-0 lead for the win.

Andrea Cerdan kept Western Michigan off the board with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win at No. 1, her first time at the No. 1 spot. The first set was one of runs as she jumped out to a 2-0 lead before falling behind a break at 4-3. She battled back to get the set back on serve at 4-4, with each player holding the rest of the way to send it to breaker. Cerdan dominated in the tiebreaker, losing just one point for the win. She fell in a 2-0 hole to start the second set before ripping off six straight games for the win.
