CHILLICOTHE (Heart of Illinois ABC) - During the cold months, it can be hard to find new hobbies, but Camp Wokanda welcomed guests Saturday morning to learn about a new winter activity.

It was the annual ‘DIY Maple Syrup-Making Course’, aimed at showing local adults a fun, new activity, plus, teaching about how the camp produces maple syrup each year.

The class taught how to identify a maple tree, how to get the sap out, and how to store and process the sap until it becomes a pancake-topper.

“This is one of our favorite parks to come out and hike. We’ve hiked out here many times and have seen the blue tubing, and just want to know what happens after,” class attendee Georgia Schmidt said.

“Always good to learn something new. I’m a teacher, so learning something new is always a good thing,” class attendee Anne Conver said.

“I’ve been here before and have seen the sapline, so I thought it was interesting that they had the class,” class attendee Jay Booth said.

Those who are interested in learning how to make maple syrup should visit Camp Wokanda Saturday, January 15 for its ‘Chilly Billy’ event.
