HOLLIDAYSBURG — In March 2017, the operators of Lakemont Park told Blair County commissioners about their desire to transform and rebrand the park by reducing the amount of amusement rides and creating more activity areas.
On Tuesday, those in charge provided commissioners with a lengthy list of events scheduled this summer to build on 2019’s efforts that went on hold in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The phone has been ringing. The public is ready to be outside,” Park President Andrea Devorris Cohen told the commissioners during a Tuesday meeting where she and Park Manager Melanie Shildt spoke of their plans.
The park has hosted three high school proms and is preparing to host its fourth, for Hollidaysburg Area High School, on Friday, Shildt said.
The Altoona Symphony Orchestra has educational activities planned from 1 to 5 p.m. for Memorial Day, followed by a concert at 6 p.m. Shildt said.
Blair County, which owns the land where Lakemont Park was built, arranged in the mid-1980s to lease that land to the Lakemont Partnership, an entity formed by Ralph Albarano and Donald Devorris who took over the park’s operations. After Devorris died in September 2017, Cohen, his daughter, took a leadership role.
In April 2019, after the park was closed for two summer seasons, Cohen advised commissioners that the newly renovated park was ready to reopen.
For 2021, the park has purchased additional yard game equipment free for use on the park grounds, Shildt said. These include Giant Jenga, Giant Chess, KanJam and Spike Ball games.
The park also has plans for monthly movie nights, food truck nights, car shows, yoga classes and basketball league games.
Its July 4 activities include fireworks and a hot dog eating contest.
Plans also include a Christmas in July program that offers the chance for photos with Santa on a park paddle boat.
While the park’s lake currently has minimal water because of a dredging project, County Administrator Nicole Hemminger said Tuesday that condition should soon begin to change.
Glenn O. Hawbaker of State College, the general contractor hired by the Intergovernmental Stormwater Committee to remove sediment, is finished or nearly finished, Hemminger said.
The contractor hired by the county for installation and welding of a gate associated with the project, is also making headway, she reported.
