Portland State managed just two hits against dominant Washington pitcher Gabbie Plain in the Vikings’ 3-0 loss to the Huskies to open the NCAA softball tournament on Friday night in Seattle.

Still, the Vikings put a bit of pressure on Plain, a finalist for national player of the year, in the fifth inning with the No. 16 national seed Huskies leading 1-0. Tayler Gunesch drew a two-out walk, and then Olivia Dean got aboard on a bunt single to put runners at first and second. But Plain struck out Ariana Abalos to end the threat, and Washington tacked on two more runs in their half of the fifth.

Plain (30-2) struck out eight and walked one. Emily Johansen’s single in the seventh was the only other blip on the evening for the Huskies right-hander. Olivia Grey (8-7) took the loss for the Vikings (15-25).

Portland State falls into an elimination game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against Seattle U. (29-20), which lost 2-0 to Michigan on Friday as the Wolverines’ Meghan Beaubien pitched a no-hitter.

The Huskies (42-11) will face the Wolverines (37-6) in a winners’ bracket game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
