Interstate 70 shut down Tuesday afternoon in both directions over Vail Pass for a couple of hours as a safety concern after a highway crash, according to CDOT.
At about 4 p.m. westbound traffic on I-70 was shut down by a crash on the west side of the Vail Pass summit, CDOT said. The westbound traffic was halted at Copper Mountain. The westbound I-70 closure for the Vail Pass summit was lifted at about 6 p.m., according to CDOT.
The eastbound lanes of the highway were shutdown in Vail at about 4:50 p.m. because of safety concerns, CDOT said. The eastbound lanes reopened just before 6 p.m.
At about 5:30 p.m., CDOT said the westbound lanes of I-70 were closed at Georgetown because of a crash. Multiple crashes were reported between Silver Plume and the Eisenhower Tunnel, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The closure was reopened at 7:57 p.m., CDOT said.

Passenger vehicles Tuesday on the I-70 mountain corridor are required to have snow or mud/snow tires, use chains or alternative traction devices, or be a 4WD or AWD vehicle, according to CDOT. The passenger vehicle traction law is in effect between Vail and Copper Mountain and Silverthorne and Bakerville. Commercial vehicle chain laws are also in effect in the mountains.
Snow was falling on Vail Pass at about 3:45 p.m. and road conditions were described as wet, according to CDOT. At the Eisenhower Tunnel conditions were described as wet, icy and snow-packed in spots with snow falling.
