According to an APH news release, 1,500 individuals will be vaccinated this weekend during the pilot program. If successful, the venue has the capacity to serve up to 3,000 people per day. The center will be the first drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination site operated by APH and is located at 3200 Jones Road, Sunset Valley, just south of West Hwy 290.
The prospect of using the Toney Burger Activity Center as a vaccination site was first presented by APH at a March 5 press conference.
“Right now, the operations that we have in place are sufficient for the vaccine allocation we have received and have more capacity than what we actually have to provide, as far as vaccines,” said Cassandra DeLeon, the assistant director of APH’s Disease Prevention Health Promotion Division, on March 5. “However, we are currently staging and preparing to stand up Burger Center. That’s something we’re planning in the next few weeks, to develop that as a new site.”
She said APH is also looking at the Travis County Expo Center as a potential new site.
“Last fall, we actually practiced vaccine distribution at Travis County Expo Center in anticipation of using that location as a vaccine site for COVID-19,” she said. “It’s a constantly evolving process; we continue to look for locations to better meet the community’s needs and to ensure we have enough capacity to provide vaccines as rapidly as we receive it.”
