LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- After two unreleased and isolated incidents over the last two weeks involving suspects shooting multiple gunshots in Lakewood, Mayor Meghan George is taking action.
Not only has she held several meetings with Lakewood Police and Law department leadership about increased measures, but the mayor has scheduled a virtual town hall meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday (March 25) to discuss safety concerns.
“There was some recent criminal activity in Lakewood involving violence,” George said. “These were very tragic incidents that we’re going to be addressing with the community at an online forum on Thursday.”
Included in the town hall will be City Council President Dan O’Malley, Police Chief Kevin Kaucheck and Police Capt. William Albrecht.
On the table includes exploring options to expand and enhance the police department presence in parks, as well as increase the city’s vast surveillance camera networks. The latter currently includes 98 police cameras throughout the streets and parks along with nine license plate-reader cameras.
“Our first surveillance cameras were put up in Madison Park back in 2006,” said George, who noted her father -- former Lakewood mayor Tom George -- started the surveillance camera program.
“We’ve continued to invest in cameras since then. We’re looking at perhaps getting updated technology in surveillance cameras.”
Due to retirements and a transfer, the city is still looking to permanently fill its Lakewood Police Department’s neighborhood policing program, which includes one officer assigned to each ward.
“We still have coverage,” George said. “I want to make it clear, the community officers -- who are a great resource and really the backbone of community policing -- would not have been on duty when either of these incidents happened.”
Residents interested in participating in the virtual town hall are asked to email Council@LakewoodOH.net or Mayor@LakewoodOH.net to register and receive the Zoom link.
