EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State field hockey team shut out Indiana, 2-0, in the home opener for the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.

The Spartans (1-2) dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Hoosiers 12-1 and holding a 10-0 advantage in corners.

"I'm really excited for the team," said MSU head coach Helen Knull, as the Spartans played their first home game since Nov. 2, 2019. "Last week at Virginia Beach, it was good just to get the season going, but being home, there's something nice about being home and winning on your home field.

"Last weekend, we played two tough games against Maryland and Northwestern, and really struggled in our attack, so this week we had a huge focus on our attacking, and today I was pleased with that. Obviously, you always want more goals, so there's some finishing we still need to work on in our corners, but overall I was really pleased with the adjustments we made from last weekend to this weekend."

MSU got on the board early as senior Lia Sinisi scored her first goal of the season at the 7:59 mark in the first quarter. Cara Bonshak was credited with the assist.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Spartans turned up the pressure in the third with eight shots and six corners. MSU had a flurry of corners midway through the quarter and finally capitalized on the sixth corner as Isa van der Weij tallied her second goal of the season off a deflected shot to put MSU on top, 2-0, at the 42:21 mark.

Junior goalkeeper Jade Arundell recorded her sixth career shutout as Indiana (0-4) was only able to get one shot the entire game, which came late in the fourth quarter.

"I think for every team across the country, this whole past year has been crazy, and to me it's about these moments for the girls," said Knull. "They're sacrificing a lot, they're giving up a lot to be here and to represent, and they want to be here, and they want to represent, so it was really cool to get a win and a shutout at home."'

Michigan State returns to action for two games at Rutgers next weekend (Friday, March 12 and Sunday, March 14).
