After a series in Washington where they were held to just 4 runs in 3 games, the Marlins’ bats have been nothing short of stellar in the first two games of this most-recent homestead.

A 9-run explosion punctuated by the return of third baseman Brian Anderson and a welcome Lewis Brinson home run sighting in Tuesday’s win over the Diamondbacks, the bats returned for an encore on Wednesday, with Miami putting up a six spot after two innings of play. When the dust settled, the Fish would come out on top 8-0, collecting their 13th win and 4th shutout of the season. Miami now have a plus-18 run differential through 29 games.

Adam Duvall would hit his first home run since April 13th - a game where he tied a franchise record with 7 RBI - an encouraging site considering the outfielder’s recent offensive woes. Duvall entered play batting just .123 over his last 57 at bats, striking out 23 times against just one walk over the span. The Marlins’ right fielder would add an RBI-single in the 7th, giving him 18 thus far in 2021. Despite his recent struggles, Duvall has managed to hit .467 with 2 outs and runners in scoring position this season.

And while the offense has been doing its job the past couple of nights, lost in the shuffle has been the team’s pitching.

After a strong start in what has become expected Tuesday from Sandy Alcantara, manager Don Mattingly called for a bullpen day in the series’ middle-game, starting Ross Detwiller as the opener for the second time this season.

Detwiller would go on to author 2 perfect innings, lowering his season ERA to 2.53, picking up 3 strikeouts in the process. In his two “opens” this season, Detwiller has allowed just 1 walk while not surrendering a hit over 3 innings.

He would be followed by Jordan Holloway, who has now thrown 10 scoreless innings to start the season. Holloway struck out 3 and walked 2 in his 3 innings of work, sitting 93-96-mph with his four-seam fastball in what would be his first Major League win. John Curtiss would follow-suit, throwing 2 scoreless innings of his own. In 13 outings this year, Curtiss has now gone 10 without allowing a run.

A starter in the minors, Holloway’s extended outing tonight can be seen as a means to stretch the 24-year old out at the big league level for an eventual role in the starting rotation.

“His stuff’s always been off the charts,” said Mattingly, who affectionately compared Holloway and his makeup - particularly with the shape of their respective breaking balls - to a former Marlin, Josh Beckett, who Mattingly managed from 2013-14 during his time as the Dodgers’ manager.

A welcome sight for Marlins’ fans came with the Major League debut of Anthony Bender.

Recently recalled from the team’s alternate training sight, Bender, who pitched scoreless baseball in spring training less than a year after pitching in Independent ball, continued the run set by previous group of hurlers, throwing a scoreless top of the 8th, striking out Tim Locastro for his first career punch out. Bender’s final pitch of the inning, which struck out Diamondbacks’ third baseman Eduardo Escobar, registered 99-mph on the stadium radar gun.

The Marlins will aim for their second sweep of the season Thursday when Pablo López squares off against veteran left-hander Madison Bumgarner, with first pitch slated for 6:40 Eastern.
