LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston High School’s (LHS) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club, which participates in community service activities throughout the school year, is currently leading a fundraising initiative to support Sunrise Association, an organization that supports children and families dealing with pediatric cancer.

FBLA’s goal is to raise $2,500 to create activity kits containing toys, playing cards, stickers, notebooks, squeeze balls, word searches and more for patients being treated local hospitals affiliated with Sunrise on Wheels, a program within the Sunrise Association.

According to LHS FBLA Co-Vice President Jason Selvin, the club selected Sunrise as the beneficiary because his family has been involved with the organization for many years. The capstone program, whose mission is “to bring the joys of childhood back to children with cancer,” also provides free day camps for cancer patients across the country.

“Sunrise on Wheels has strong local roots, as the gifts will go to hospitals in New York and New Jersey,” said Selvin. “Simply put, Sunrise is close to home and a great program and FBLA enjoys supporting organizations that help children, families and our local community.”

Due to COVID-19, many hospital-run programs for pediatric cancer patients have been put on hold. To help relieve the stresses of cancer and bring a little joy to the kids’ lives, Sunrise began a new program called “Surprises from Sunrise” and has been delivering surprise toys, games and other items to the children.

In addition to the summer camps, which are affiliated with 36 hospitals and medical centers in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, California and Israel, the Sunrise Association’s Sunrise on Wheels program provides individual arts and crafts for children in hospitals to brighten their stay. When school is not in session, the organization also hosts family-friendly events such as Sunrise Sundays and Fun-days.

Members of Livingston’s FBLA club will be collecting funds for the activity kits through March 31, and all donors will be recognized when they donate on behalf of a student in the comments section BY CLICKING HERE.

Earlier this year, the LHS FBLA participated in the Lancers Week of Service by collecting diapers to support its partner charity March of Dimes, which Selvin mentioned is one of its annual fundraisers.

In February, the group partook in New Jersey FBLA's initiative, "Operation Uplift,” which recognized the economic crisis and resulting impoverishment and homelessness that the COVID-19 pandemic has created. As part of this initiative, members assembled more than 50 snack bags for those staying at the Homeless Solutions shelter located in Morristown.

Last year, FBLA participated in World Prematurity Awareness Day, Pin-Up for Preemies and held a fundraiser at CycleBar fundraiser. Members also raised money for The Friendship Circle by participating in the organization’s annual walk.

“We typically do community service events for organizations that our members are passionate about,” said Selvin.

According to its website, FBLA is a national organization that aims to inspire and prepare students to “become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.”

In addition to practicing responsible citizenship, FBLA members in Livingston also form networks with business and community leaders, and gain experience with managing projects beyond the classroom.
